Whoopi Goldberg is showing up in ABC Primetime tonight – no, they’re not doing a special evening episode of THE VIEW.  She’s lending her humor and wisdom to one of the best shows on TV, THE MIDDLE, as a guidance counselor who helps Sue in her time of need.    Eden Sher, Sue’s portrayer, called working with Whoopi “life-changing” and went on to describe how she came to the show –

“Well, I had done her show, and she’d told me she loved the show, but I just assumed she was saying that.  Then she told Patty [Heaton], like a year later, I want to be on the show, I want to play Sue’s guidance counselor, and I want to have braces,” Sher said.  I mentioned to Eden that not many people will request braces, and she went on to add, “I know, but she is so frickin cool, and she did!”

Eden and I then delved into what’s coming for the rest of the season in an interview about THE MIDDLE in general, why we love Sue’s optimism and what she hopes to see in the future for her character.

What can you talk about for this episode, and what sets it aside for Sue Heck, and why it’s such a good one for you?
Oh she sort, it’s almost like, the “it gets better” mentality, personified.  Sue never really expected her life to go badly, but she is really having, like a valley, in terms of her peaks and valleys, on her emotional scale, and she’s having a rough time.  This guidance counselor is just so inspiring to her.  It showed real growth for [Sue].  Continue Reading »

“Normals” see a Comic Con as weird. FanBoys/FanGirls/Geeks/Nerds see it as The Ultimate Show. The creative types whose love of fantasy, fiction, action, gaming, movies, books and art have a deep appreciation for San Diego Comic Con especially. Putting a Comic Con experience into words is near impossible. David Reddish has managed to incorporate the realistic and the unattainable interactions in one fail swoop!

The phrase that comes to my mind when referring to Comic Con is always “Chaotic Zoo of the Unwashed Masses”; however Reddish manages to show a love story and level of sweetness that every Con Attendee secretly wishes for. (Gay, Straight, or Purple Alien alike!!) All while navigating among the scantily dressed cosplayers! I thoroughly enjoyed Sex Drugs And Superheroes and encourage those who understand the FanBoy/FanGirl mindset to give it a read.

The book, SEX, DRUGS & SUPERHEROES: A SAVAGE JOURNEY INTO A WRETCHED HIVE OF SCUM AND SUPER VILLAINY (THE COMIC-CON CHRONICLES), by writer David Reddish with illustrations by Michael Szalapski, is available now for Kindle and Nook! Continue Reading »

You may recognize Grant Bowler from a variety of My Take On TV favorites of the past – UGLY BETTY, LOST; he had a great run on TRUE BLOOD, recently, too.  Now, he’s throwing his hat into the Dallas ring as a businessman trying to seal a major deal (wink, wink) with Cricket Caruth-Reilly (Miriam Shor) on GCB.  To celebrate the penultimate episode of GCB airing Sunday, I had the chance to chat with Grant about his character, his plans for a GCB future, and what he loves about this show.  I also got him to offer up some info on his exciting new Syfy series!

I’m excited to see your episode of GCB.  Such a fun show to start the week with on Sunday nights.
Isn’t it gorgeous?  I love the thing!

What is it about the show that got you involved?  Was it the script, did you know Bobby (Harling)?
I had worked with the Executive Director on the show, Victor Nelli, Jr., he had the same role on UGLY BETTY; he had been Executive Director on that.  He called me up and said, you know, I need some sort of steam rolling bonehead to come on here, and mix it up for a girl, and I thought of you, so that was pretty much that [laughs].  I’d read about the show, and I’d seen the cast, and it’s got such a brilliant comedic cast to it, so it was kind of a no-brainer, really. FRINGE is coming back!

After much speculation, I am happy to report (from Amrie) that FOX has decided to keep FRINGE alive for at least one more season! HOORAY!! I’d held off writing about my amazing opportunity during WonderCon 2012 to sit at the round tables with cast members Blair Brown (Nina Sharp), Seth Gabel (Lincoln Lee), John Noble (Dr. Walter Bishop, oh how I adore him!), Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop) and Executive Producers Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman. Frankly, because I didn’t want to jinx it! They all were so delightful it was breaking my heart to think that they may not get another season. So I crossed my fingers and it’s proved lucky!

The EPs Wyman and Pinkner have a plan! Wyman says, “We’ve always known where the show is going,” and Pinkner adds, “The ending of this season is pivotal.”

Well…duh guys!! But I was ecstatic to hear they aren’t just winging it. They have a purpose; a specific story to tell. They’ve done a fantastic job so far, and they’ve even crossed over into comic books to assist with the telling!

Nina has become quite the bad guy in the Alter-Niverse. And Blair had to endure the torture of the, well torture scenes.  “The arc [for Nina] has been a surprise,” says Brown.  “Those scenes were painful! I got a knot on the back of my head [from thrashing around]!”

With that level of commitment in the acting, it’s no wonder that the fans are so loyal!

Seth Gabel agrees, telling us at WonderCon, “We have a very loyal fan base. They’ve kept at very least consistent baseline that [the numbers] don’t drop below.”

We’ve gotten to see the Astrid’s meet, we also got a Lincoln-centric episode too! That was a hard one. Having only one Linc survive. It also leads me to believe that Faux-Livia (redhead Olivia) actually had a deeper relationship with her Lincoln, though maybe that’s something yet to be revealed.

We’ve got a few episodes left, including the season 4 finale. I’m so happy for the cast and crew, they’ve really got a good show going and I’m excited to see what season 5 is going to bring! I’ll be watching for sure!

Seriously. I can’t even begin to describe the emotional wreckage this show has done to me.

Every time, and I mean every time I start to write about SUPERNATURAL I get mad. And sad. To quote Gilmore Girls, “I’m SMAD!” Yes, there is still speculation about a Season 8. But c’mon there’s been season after season of terrific and painful storylines, granted these pains were smattered between hilarity. Which made the show’s gross out factor manageable and having two of the hottest pieces of man-candy doesn’t hurt either. But it was the funny stuff that makes this show so dear to my heart.

And now, the bodies can’t drop fast enough! It’s like a Joss Whedon series! They have never been afraid to kill off anybody gruesomely, but it hurts worse when it’s someone who’s become crucial to the base of the show.  After the death of Bobby, de facto father figure. I had to give myself a SUPERNATURAL break for a few weeks. Continue Reading »

“What’s a story? Story books are based on what? Imagination. Where does that come from? It has to come from somewhere” – such powerful words from Jefferson/The Mad Hatter desperately trying to use logic to convince Emma of what we, the viewers, know: she’s got to start believing or all is lost.

ONCE UPON A TIME has really hooked me. The complex stories the writers have created based upon well loved childhood tales are nothing short of splendid. Just like in the “real world” where you and I are, people are intertwined.  They’re complicated to put it mildly and dependent on one another for survival; whether that entails the destruction of each other, well that’s yet to be discovered.

What do we know? Emma teeters on the edge of believing, but keeps leaning back towards cynicism every time. That’s getting frustrating. We’re going to need a leap of faith here soon. For crying out loud, there have been snippets but we need something big. We are going to need something concrete that Emma can believe and keep it. We know that Regina, Mr. Gold and Jefferson all know that they are from the “other realm” and remember who they are. Continue Reading »

I’ll admit that when I watched the premiere of BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, I wasn’t immediately hooked.  I liked the cast, I liked the idea and story behind the show, but it didn’t strike me as must watch until I watched the pilot again.  From that second viewing, I was smitten.  While HAPPY ENDINGS is on hiatus (and yes, I realize they’re on separate networks), BFF has taken the top spot on the “let me swap ridiculous quote text messages with Ducky” list – last week’s was “You Cracked the Case! Congratulations Brenda Leigh Johnson from The Closer!”  Having seen tonight’s all new episode, I can only image what’s in store for our communication tonight!

Jessica St Clair and Lennon Parham have such an incredible chemistry that has come from years of them working together that I would totally believe they’ve had experiences together like the ones that their onscreen Jess and Lennon are going through.  Tonight’s new episode, “Single and Loving It,” follows the ready-to-date-again Jess back into the dating world and as is the case with her, all the time, always, it doesn’t go well.  Guest spots from favorites Ryan Hansen and Aaron Hill (Beaver from GREEK) added already great layers to an episode I’ve now watched 4 times and still laugh out loud with each viewing.  Next week’s episode, featuring a blast from Lennon’s past and a dance performance to die for, means that now is the perfect time to get on board!

It might not have been your cup of tea upon first viewing, but give the show a second chance – it’s a good one!

I have to admit, I was surprised when I watched THE L.A. COMPLEX’s season premiere, airing on The CW tonight at 9/8c.  It was funny, the actors were acting, rather than just reading lines and looking pretty, the setting is beautiful – this could be a surprise must-see show for me!   Check out a preview of tonight’s show and let us know – are you checking out THE L.A. COMPLEX, starring Cassie Steele (never better) and Jewel Staite (she’s the best)?

I spent some time this morning chatting with the incredibly charming Cuba Gooding, Jr, about his upcoming role as Dwayne “DJ” Johnson, a counselor at a youth correctional facility. At the facility, incarcerated girls and young women come from troubled – often violent — backgrounds. Many of them belong to gangs and have been involved with illegal drugs – as users and/or dealers. In the words of DJ, “They come in [here] so broken…These are girls who’ve been abused and objectified their whole lives.”  Check out the video from our chat, and be sure to check out the premiere of this all new movie Sunday, April 22, at 9/8c on ABC!

You all know Jane Espenson from her work on many of our favorite series – BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, BATTLESTAR, CAPRICA, GILMORE GIRLS, the list goes on.  This season she’s been lending her creativity to ABC’s Sunday night hit ONCE UPON A TIME, which returns Sunday at 8/7c with a Jane-penned episode appropriately titled “The Return.”

To celebrate the show’s return to our schedules and what sounds like an exciting batch of final episodes, I spent a bit of time chatting with Jane about what’s to come and what the writers are pushing for in Season 2 (and beyond).

What is it like writing on ONCE UPON A TIME compared to other shows you’ve been involved with, and how is it similar?
It is similar because I’ve written on a lot of genre shows and so this is some of my favorite kind of writing.  Where you’re talking about the world, but you’ve sort of got this lens of fantasy between you and the real world, which allows you to write a little more honestly, because you’ve got that little bit of distance, gives you a little more objectivity, which I love.  I think the audiences love it, and I love writing it.  Different, how is it different from other projects?  It reminds me a lot of BUFFY and it’s sort of great mixture of tones, and that it can be really dark and really funny at the same time.  And that’s not something that all shows have.
