Stop what you’re doing! You must immediately get to your DVR – or your online DVR manager or your VCR or wherever you record important things – and make sure that your recording of YOU’RE THE WORST is all set and ready to go on their NEW network, FXX, tonight at 10:30/9:30c.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s focus a little bit on why I think you need to be watching!  Created by former TWoP recapper (among other things) Stephen Falk, last year’s funniest new comedy told the story of Jimmy (Chris Geere, sosososo good) and Gretchen (a fearless Aya Cash) as they reluctantly fell together into a relationship that neither of them wanted.  The season ended (spoilers) with Gretchen’s apartment up in flames and her making the bold decision to move in with Jimmy “temporarily.”

When season 2 starts up tonight, Jimmy and Gretchen have decided that they need to keep their falling-into-normalcy as not-normal as possible, partying every minute, in an effort to avoid falling into a relationship rut. While they’re doing drugs and chasing Google-like-camera-vehicles, Lindsay (Kether Donohue, perfection), is off reeling from the revelation that her husband Paul, a man on whom she cheated and who she kind of hated, had fallen in love with his online girlfriend.  On top of everything, the fourth of the four leads, Edgar (Desmin Borgers, sublime), Jimmy’s roommate and personal chef, finds himself falling for Lindsay after her impromptu Kate Bush performance at the end of S1.

I can’t say enough good things about this show – the writing is whip smart.  Cutting, edgy, realistic, current.  The relationships are some of the truest on TV.  Jimmy and Gretchen are reluctantly falling in love, with their supportive but also sometimes not so supportive best friends by their sides.  The cast is genius.  Before the show, I was loosely familiar with Aya Cash, but knew little of the others.  They easily become some of my favorite people on TV because they hold nothing back.  Gretchen is sarcastic and mean, but can be extremely vulnerable; Cash nails it.  Jimmy is a straight up curmudgeon; yet I find Chris Geere so endearing that Jimmy comes off as a real catch.  Lindsay is straight up crazy and Donohue clearly takes relish in playing the part.  And Edgar, oh Edgar – he was broken by combat but I think secretly he has it more together than anyone else; there is no one who can deliver a line reading like Desmin Borges can.

After a second episode set at the mall, with Jimmy embarking on a new novel and Gretchen accepting the fact that new stuff isn’t just going to appear out of thin air, I can say without doubt that YOU’RE THE WORST is getting better with each minute, and you’d be THE WORST if you didn’t get on board right now!

Check out some promo shots of this wonderful cast and go set that DVR!
