A final farewell to GOTHAM

GOTHAM will take its final bow this Thursday night on FOX. Over the span of five years we have watched the origin stories of Gotham favorites. Such as, Penguin, The Riddler, Detective James Gordon, Selina Kyle, Ivy Pepper and of course, Bruce Wayne. The show has bucked tradition by breaking up Barbara and Jim; giving each of them new love interests, and giving Alfred a larger role in Bruce’s training. The biggest story arch came from Cameron Monaghan, most known for his role on Shameless. When he stepped on the scene as Jerome Velaska, he never confirmed his role as a young joker. Each season his character morphed into it’s own origin story. Jerome managed to die twice before finally staying in the ground. Before he made his memorable exit, his twin brother Jeremiah was introduced. After Jerome died, he made sure his legacy would carry on in his brother. He left a trap for his twin to brainwash and destroy his sense of morality. Jeremiah seemed to be on the same road to becoming the Joker; and it became confirmed when he and Bruce Wayne fought in the Ace Chemical warehouse. Jeremiah fell into a vat of green poison, survived the impact, and was last seen in a hospital bed.

The finale will take place ten years into the future of Gotham. Penguin has been locked in prison, Bruce Wayne left the city to focus on his training, Selina Kyle becoming the legendary cat-burglar we’ve come to know. Edward Nygma has fully accepted his persona as The Riddler, primed to take over as Gotham’s big bad. The trailer did not show the fate of Ivy Pepper, nor did they show the fate of Dr. Lee Tompkins. Camren Bicondova acknowledged on Twitter that Lilli Simmons would finish up the series as Selina Kyle.

The actor’s identity surrounding Batman has not been revealed as of late. David Mazouz has previously said he wanted to wear the iconic suit. All the fan theories, suspicions and questions will be answered this Thursday. The cast is eternally grateful to the fans who rallied to ensure Gotham’s legacy would live on. The show reached 100 episodes so it could one day be put into syndication and be viewed by a wider audience. Having been on this ride since the beginning, I look forward to seeing the lasting impact of this production.
