Jason George and Martin Henderson talk OFF THE MAP

Tonight on ABC, OFF THE MAP, the latest medical drama from Shonda Rhimes’ Shondaland production company, premieres at 10/9c.  The show, created and overseen by GREY’S / PRIVATE PRACTICE alum Jenna Bans, follows the lives of three doctors who leave the civilized medicine world to work in a tiny understaffed medical clinic.  From ABC:

Welcome to “la ciudad de las estrellas” (the city of stars), a tiny town in the South American jungle which has one understaffed, under-stocked medical clinic. That’s where idealistic young Dr. Lily Brenner just landed, along with fellow doctors Mina Minard and Tommy Fuller. All of these young doctors are running away from personal demons, but they aren’t the only ones with emotional baggage. Take the legendary and enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was the youngest Chief of Surgery at UCLA. He walked away from it all to found the clinic. Together with his right-hand doctor, Otis Cole, the mysterious Dr. Ryan Clark and local doctor Zita Alvarez, he’ll teach the newcomers how to save lives in the most challenging environment they’ve ever worked in — while taking them on adventures of a lifetime.

The show has a great cast – all familiar faces that are exceedingly full of charm: Valerie Cruz, Zach Gilford, Mamie Gummer, Caroline Dhavernas, Rachel Lefevre, Martin Henderson, and Jason George (who I love from ELI STONE, among other places).  Dubbed “the GREY’S ANATOMY of the jungle” because of the medical theme, the show deviates quickly by using what I’ve seen referred to in many reviews a “MacGuyver medicine;” in the first episode alone, a coconut is used as an IV bag

To celebrate the premiere, I had the chance to speak with Jason and Martin about what drew them to the role, and why they think this is a show that people should be watching (sunshine in Hawaii aside).  Check out the video above, and be sure to catch the series premiere after all new comedies on ABC.  I think this one could stick around!
