My Take On….BOB’S BURGERS on FOX

Animation Domination is all new on FOX tonight with brand new episodes of THE SIMPSONS, FAMILY GUY, and AMERICAN DAD!  Also brand new tonight, at 8:30/7:30c, is the series premiere of BOB’S BURGERS, a new half hour animated comedy from creator Loren Bouchard (whose credits include DR KATZ, PROFESSIONAL THERAPIST).  From FOX:

BOB’S BURGERS is a new animated series about a man, his family and a burger joint.

A second-generation restaurateur, BOB (H. Jon Benjamin) is a dreamer with big ideas about burgers. Despite his greasy counters, his lousy location next to a crematorium and the occasionally spotty service, Bob is convinced his burgers speak for themselves.

Bob’s wife, LINDA (John Roberts), supports Bob’s dream through thick and thin, but has some dreams of her own. Their oldest daughter, TINA (Dan Mintz), is a 13-year-old hopeless romantic with minimal social skills. Middle child GENE (Eugene Mirman) is a self-described musician, class clown and all-around entertainer. Their youngest, LOUISE (Kristen Schaal), is the most enthusiastic about her dad’s business, but her imagination and scheming make her somewhat of a liability in the kitchen.

The restaurant is situated in an eastern seaboard town, complete with an oceanside amusement pier called Wonder Wharf. Next door to BOB’S BURGERS is the It’s Your Funeral Home and Crematorium – owned and operated by Mort the Mortician, one of Bob’s most faithful regulars. And across the street is Jimmy Pesto’s, Bob’s main competition and one of the many thorns in Bob’s side.

In tonight’s premiere, Bob’s busy preparing the restaurant for their grand re-re-reopening, while his wife Linda is hoping for a big surprise for their anniversary. As he preps the family to make their latest grand opening a hit, an issue with Louise’s Show and Tell at school brings on the health inspector. What follows is a series of misadventures that feature a bullhorn that makes farting noises, a little visit from Mort, and the latest specialty burger, “The Child Molester.”

Full disclosure: I’m a huge fan of FX’s ARCHER, which features H Jon Benjamin in the lead role as well, so I have trouble watching the show and not imagining that Lana or Mallory will show up, but Bob is just exasperated and excited enough that you can relate to him. Kristen Schaal’s Louise is just sarcastic and funny enough to be more than just the precocious youngest child. Her disdain for a burger joint combined with her unending support of Bob is the highlight of the episode. It’s not breaking new ground, but it’s a fun way to pass some time. This episode might just be the best one yet. I just found out yesterday that I can watch missed episodes of Bob’s Burgers online at http://www.dishonline.com. I’m glad I found an alternate place to view missed episodes of the show for free. A benefit to being a DISH Network customer and employee is that I can watch thousands of titles for free at http://bit.ly/dJzWgo, this includes Bob’s Burgers episodes and clips.
