Remember a few weeks back when I was in NYC? I was there visiting the cast and set of the newest NBC show, KINGS, which has quickly climbed the ranks of my “Most anticipated show of the Spring” list.  A sweeping epic, the is a modern day David Vs Goliath.  The David in this case is played by my newest TV obsession, Chris Egan.  The Australian import plays a young soldier from the country of Gilboa, with lots of brothers, a windowed mother, and the weight of the world on his shoulders.  At war with the neighboring country of Gath, David inadvertantly saves the Kings son, Jack, without realizing it.  The Goliath of the tale is Gath’s giant tank that David finds himself face to face with.

As David becomes the hero of Gilboa, he quickly finds himself swept up in the King’s court, romancing the King’s daughter, attending parties, and becoming the hero of the whole country.  As the King, played with incredible flair by the incomparable Ian McShane (side note: one of the nicest people ever), struggles with his world crashing down around him.

There is so much to love about this show.  It’s gorgeous.  The direction is beautiful.  The acting is beyond impressive.  Sebastian Stan, who plays the King’s son Jack, is surprisingly strong as he plays the brooding, hurting, vulnerable son.  The set is gorgeous – the main setting is at a house on Long Island that looks like a brilliant British castle.  I couldn’t believe it existed in our country, let alone a short train ride from where I am. 

Having watched the first two hours with some of my blogging friends, and the team from NBC and 360i, I was even more excited to see hours 3 and 4.  I do have to say that there are moments where the show spends a bit too much getting the point across, but I think, as the show continues to explore this monarchy, audiences will find themselves entertained.  3.5 out of 5 stars.
