Golden Globe Nominations 2009!

Here we go!  For a full list of nominations for movies and TV, head on over to our friends at HitFix.

Here are the TV nominations with my take on the nominees!  Keep in mind that I realize that the Golden Globes are kind of a joke, so I take the nominations with a grain of salt.

Supporting Actress in a TV Series (Comedy / Drama / Musical / Miniseries, etc.):

Jane Adams, HUNG
Rose Byrne, DAMAGES
Jane Lynch, GLEE
Janet McTeer, SENSE AND SENSIBILITY
Chloe Sevigny, BIG LOVE

Am’s Take: So excited to see Jane Lynch nominated.  She’s genius on GLEE.  Jane Adams was the stand out performance for me on HUNG so it’s nice to see her rewarded!  Other noms are good.  I wish they would just man up and create three separate categories between miniseries/movie, drama, and comedy, because there are some great roles not being recognized.  Portia deRossi, for example?

Best Actress in a Mini Series/Made-for-Television Movie:

Joan Allen, GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
Drew Barrymore, GREY GARDENS
Jessica Lange, GREY GARDENS
Anna Paquin, THE COURAGEOUS HEART OF IRENA SENDLER
Sigourney Weaver, PRAYERS FOR BOBBY

Am’s Take: Didn’t see any of them, but based on preconceived notions about their acting, I’m going Joan Allen.

Best Actress in a Drama Series:

Glenn Close, DAMAGES
January Jones, MAD MEN
Juliana Margulies, THE GOOD WIFE
Anna Paquin, TRUE BLOOD
Kyra Sedgwick, THE CLOSER

Am’s Take: All great actresses.  January Jones took Betty Draper to an elite level this season on MAD MEN.  I just wish that Katey Sagal could have broken through.  Or Connie Britton.  But I fear they’ll remain on the perennially un-nominated track that Lauren Graham’s been riding for a decade.

Best Actress in a Comedy / Musical Series:

Toni Colette, THE UNITED STATES OF TARA
Courtney Cox, COUGARTOWN
Edie Falco, NURSE JACKIE
Tina Fey, 30 ROCK
Lea Michele, GLEE

Am’s Take: Great nominations – good to see some new blood in there with Lea and Courtney’s nominations.  I think Tina Fey is perfectly funny but it’s time for someone else to get the credit they deserve.  The Globes have a history of giving the award to the new “ingenue” each year.  Jennifer Garner got it for ALIAS, Keri Russell for FELICITY.  This could be Lea’s year!

Supporting Actor in a TV Series (Comedy / Drama / Musical / Miniseries, etc.):

Michael Emerson, LOST
Neil Patrick Harris, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
William Hurt, DAMAGES
John Lithgow, DEXTER
Jeremy Piven (I’m sorry, really?), ENTOURAGE

Am’s Take: Putting aside my hatred for the combined category, and my continual eye rolling for Jeremy Piven, and whatever naughty pictures he has on every nominating body, not a bad category.  I really hope that John Lithgow takes this one because he was GENIUS on DEXTER this season.  Lots of folks missing, can’t even begin to start ranting about it!

Best Actress in a Mini Series/Made-for-Television Movie:

Kenneth Branagh, WALLANDER
Brendan Gleeson, INTO THE STORM
Kevin Bacon, TAKING CHANCE
Chiwetel Ejiofor, ENDGAME
Jeremy Irons, GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
Am’s Take: Um good for you guys!  Let’s go….Kevin Bacon!

Best Actor in a Drama Series:

Simon Baker, THE MENTALIST
Michael C Hall, DEXTER
Jon Hamm, MAD MEN
Hugh Laurie, HOUSE
Bill Paxton, BIG LOVE

Am’s Take: I don’t necessarily know if what Simon Baker is doing is the best acting in the world, but he’s charming and adorable, and I don’t mind it at all!  So many people that could have been nominated (cough Kyle Chandler cough), but I think the rest of the group is totally deserving, especially after what Laurie is doing with HOUSE this season.

Best Actor in a Comedy / Musical Series:

Alec Baldwin, 30 ROCK
Steve Carrell, THE OFFICE
David Duchovny, CALIFORNICATION
Thomas Jane, HUNG
Matthew Morrison, GLEE

Am’s Take: I’m over Alec Baldwin.  And I think David Duchovny is good, but not good enough, and Thomas Jane, really?  This one’s fully of surprises for me.  Matthew Morrison?  I’m like, YES, awesome, but then I stop and think about the role he’s played, and aside from a few great dramatic moments, is he win worthy?

Best Miniseries / Made for TV Movie:

GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
GREY GARDENS
INTO THE STORM
LITTLE DORRITT
TAKING CHANCE

Am’s Take: Um….congrats to all who were nominated!

Best Drama Series:

BIG LOVE
DEXTER
HOUSE
MAD MEN
TRUE BLOOD

Am’s Take: Nothing particularly “wrong” with the category, but there are definitely shows missing.  I actually thought THE GOOD WIFE might sneak onto the list.  I knew not to expect SONS OF ANARCY or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, but where was LOST?  Last season was fabulous!  But I do like all 5 shows nominated (some more than others, sorry MAD MEN), so I won’t grumble too much!

Best Comedy/Musical TV Series:

30 ROCK
ENTOURAGE
GLEE
MODERN FAMILY
THE OFFICE

Am’s Take: Of course I’m thrilled to see GLEE and MODERN FAMILY get nominated!  The fact that they could get nominated, and THE OFFICE still made it onto the list.  I just wish people would get over their ridiculous love affair with ENTOURAGE!

What do you think?  What’s missing, who is missing?

  • When the Golden Globe nominees are released I can figure out what movies I should see that I haven’t seen yet – sweet

  • This is one of the best series ever to air on television. It’s hands-down the best TV has to offer today. “Mad Men” has it all – beginning with a well-crafted storyline and including its big-budget-film level production values, the incredible writing, impeccably wrought characters portrayed by perfectly cast actors and actresses…and the music, particularly the songs selected to play out at the end of each episode…WOW…Matt Weiner, his cast and crew have given us three solid seasons of the finest television…cannot wait till Season 4.
